The final result! The patch is a replica and was bought on ebay. I think this calls for a proper display base - which I plan to build next.

Once more some heavy masking was involved to paint the black areas on the wing-engine pylon joints.

The filled in area will later be painted black (as on the original plane). That makes things a lot easier.

One side completed, the USAF lettering still missing. It's printed in dark blue (like the roundels) on the Fox One sheet. This would indeed be correct when you look at the official painting specs for the Hustler. However, in real life the USAF lettering seems to have been painted in black most of the time.

The yellow part is the pointed nose of a Revell Fiat G.91 from the spares box. Now it represents the tail cone of an early Hustler.

As I won't show an open cockpit I can live with what's in the box. Only the three seats have been swapped for parts from the spares box as the early Hustler I want to depict didn't have the capsule ejection seats jet.

There was a nasty gap at the rear which I tried to close with some stretched sprue. Let's see how this turns out after some sanding.

Thanks guys! @Gustavo: Your models look very good to me. I don't see any reason why you should not build your B-58! My NMF is far from flawless, by the way. Taking nice photos is at least 50% of the presentation.

Does anyone else work on a 'good' side of the model, e.g., all the best tiny painted parts go on the 'good' side? I had an extreme case of this with the 35 year old cable car kit. Some of the handrails and a step were no longer straight, and one of the decals disintegrated in water - i had to piece it back together as "Poell & Hyde". Those went on the 'other' side.😢

Looks terrific Bernd, looking forward to the finished result.

@Gary Dahström: That's an interesting approach. Perhaps it makes sense to work that way when you know that the model will be displayed with only one side visible in the display cabinet.

Decal work is now halfway done. Only one issue emerged: Fox One has printed the USAF lettering in the same blue as the USAF roundel. That would indeed be correct when you look at the official painting specifications of that time for the Hustler. However, it seems that not all paint shops paid attention to those official specs as all the color photos I have seen look like the USAF lettering is rather black than dark blue. The old Italeri decals in my boxing are in black, but the decal film is impossible to hide on those old decals. Fortunately a friend owns a new boxing and will send me those new Italeri decals (black). And I'll try to get a new decal sheet from Italeri's spare part service to pay him back - quite the scheme 😄

Thanks Lochsa_River, Tom M and Konrad Limmer! I'm really happy how it turned out in the end. Although there are, of course, quite a few flaws that I could list here. For example the insignia decals on the wings should have been placed a little more back, nearer to the flaps.
Speaking of flaws - the biggest flaw of the kit is, in my opinion, how Italeri designed the connection of the inner engine pylons to the wings. A tiny part of the pylon is already moulded to the wings. So you can either install the whole enginge pylons/pods before the painting and take good care of that seam but have major problems painting the inner engine pods. Or you can glue the pylons to the wings after the paint job which makes hiding the seam almost impossible. I chose the second option and was extra lucky as my plane had those black areas at that joint which hide the seam very well.
