Hanno KleineckeSribing completed. The clear parts turned out to be unusably thick and too small. When I spoke to Bernhard about it, he suggested to replace them with very thin transparent foil, to glue them into place with CA and sand it flush. Turned out to be the perfect solution. Windows are completely flush with the fuselage now.

Ben STONEHanno can you please explain to me the process of the clear parts and the "clear foil" used and what did you do when you mentioned that you sanded it flush? I understand the term but how did you go about it without affecting the clear parts?

@Ben : I cut two well oversized Parts out of 0.13 mm clear styrene, and glued them into position with Tamiya CA. After processeing, I sealed the seams with more Ca and sanded just the seams very very carefully, not to harm the see through areas. At first with a coarse sanding stick, then with 1000 grid Tamiya sanding sponge. Took me about 1,5 hours.
Next thing is to cut masks to protect the clear during the following steps. I hope to be able to close the fuselage today, after putting in the cockpit parts.....

Hanno KleineckeAny time Ben. No shake and bake one available of this bird, I'm afraid. I came across this one by chance, otherwise I would have gone for the Planet kit I guess, but that one is rather expensive.There is another one from Mach 2, but everyone said it's crap. 🙂

You've also got the 1/144 Dragon double kit which is shake and bake kit ....

Hanno KleineckeBeautiful build Julian ! 🙂 The Revell Kit really isn't bad fitwise, but the raised panels need some attention, the Windows as well, as mentioned. Wasn't aware of the Dragon one, but it´s not my scale anyhow.

I glued the kit clear parts and applied with several coats of Micro Kristal Klear until all was flush with the fuselage. After that a clear gloss top coat sealed it all. Not a perfect solution, but acceptable ....

Hanno KleineckeHabe ein klein wenig "Untermaßig" maskiert, um alles verschwinden zu lassen Bild 14. Der alte Record Kompressor hat für Belüftung beim Rumpf schluß gesorgt.... 🙂

Hanno KleineckeX-3 completed. This was no easy one, a lot of filling and sanding had to be done. Scribed some of the more important panel lines.
Decals were useless, as they were made in 1982, and everything White had turned yellowish. So insignias came from the spare box, and the logos were homemade.
Did a bit of scratchbuilt deatailing to the gearstruts and the inner side of the wheel well doors.
The highly polished looking Metal surfaces of the wings were done by using Uschi's
Chrome powder over Alclad Black gloss base.

Hanno KleineckeThank you Christian ! You're right, apparently the F 104 was the main benefactor of the experience and data gained by the X 3 project. Their wings look very much alike !

Hanno KleineckeActually the X 3 never gained its full potential, as the designated Westinghouse J 46 engine never materialized, but the F 104 turned out to be the real hot rod 😎.
