Lost a few progress photos along the way so here is an update. As you can see the T-2 is buttoned up and in the painting phase. Minor issues in the fit category. Nothing a little filler and sanding couldn't fix. Canopy masked...now I know why I'd rather do 1:48 or larger 1:72 scale birds. Wee little man is painted and in the cockpit.
After looking over the paint scheme and the decals, I have decided to use the decals as a template for masks and paint the three colors versus use the decals. 1. they are older (1980's) and 2. I thought I'd giver a go at masking the paint scheme. YOLO. More pics as I get some paint down.

The overall blue is done. Masked the wheel wels and speed brake areas and painted them white as well as the intake lips. Startied decaling and have to make a decision. Changed my mind from previously and decided to use the decals. Only to find out the white of the decals is not solid enough in some areas to shield the blue from showing through. Pondering whether to remove some of the decals and paint those areas or just say what the hell and press on. I do have 4 of the same A/C in 1:48 so may just chaulk this up as a learning adventure.

will be costly on tape, but a good learning rehearsal.... tip, make a copy of the decals, and use these as a template for the masking when you'll go that way... Maybe in hindsight, starting with white would have been better...

Bart, those were my intentions but I changed my mind. I'll get some photos up tonight of the decal progress.
