The castle at Savigny-les-Beaunes:
You’ve never seen a French chateau like this one. Parked in the rustic burgundy courtyard, there is the world’s largest private collection of fighter jets. They are ranging from WWII jets, Soviet military aircrafts and even some of the earliest models of aeroplanes.
Spanning 27 hectares of land, the 14th-century castle belongs to Michel Pont, a former Abarth racing driver, who had inherited the impressive piece of architecture. He had acquired his jets from all over the world. Besides fighter jets, the chateau also houses Pont’s extensive collection of vintage automobiles, race cars, helicopters, fire trucks and many more.
His parents inspired him to pursue his eccentric collection. Pont chose to share access to the medieval castle with the public, rather than living in isolation. He has opened several museums, the chateau being the main one, to share his well-maintained collection with the world. Pont began collecting in the 1980’s and now holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest private collection of fighter planes.
The chateau itself is a great place to visit, even if you’re not into antique fighter planes or vintage vehicles. The castle also can host events and weddings and is also home to a pretty swanky restaurant. You’ll be able to explore the magnificent interior of the castle that still holds the beautiful classic remnants of French medieval architecture. Don’t forget to troll across the lush greenery of the gardens that surround the chateau.
The grounds of the chateau are open to visitors all year round, for all seasons. Entrance costs only 12 euros. If you’re hoping to dine in the chateau’s restaurant, you can make a reservation.
A little extra tip for wine lovers: the chateau is home to a 14th-century French winery.
