F104 finished minus wheel well doors and decals. The metal colour is Bernhard Schrocks special homemade
Mix of Testors Metalizer and Sealer, which he generously donated to me. Thanks a lot Bernhard, now you got me Hooked up on this almost impossible to scrounge - stuff ! 🙂 🙂
I think that the metal effect is superior to Alclad, plus : It cures within minutes and can be polished with a cotton swab or something similar.

The Rocketeer Decals are a tremendous disappointment, not only are the colours not very close to the original, they are incredebly thick, and refused to soften from every setting solution I threw against them. All Panellines just vanish underneath them. So after experiencing that with the big orange ones on the wings, I decided not use the even bigger ones for the fin, and sprayed it with a homemade mix, which turned out to be a bit of a missmatch. So I ripped the ones on the wings off again, to be able to spray them with the same mix. I think I will have to live with the not matching orange on the fuselage, too much of a hustle painting that too, from my perspective.........

Very nicely done. It's a shame to hear about the Rocketeer decals - I have this same sheet and planned on using it to do Joe Walker's plane (although not specifically on the sheet, his markings can be created from it by creative cut and paste, I think). Now I know to plan on painting the fluorescent orange. You mentioned using a mixture of Testors Metalizer and Sealer - one after the other, or actually mixing them together? How durable is this finish - can it be masked over? Again, great job! 👍 👍 👍

Hanno Kleinecke
Thanks MRMLA, Choppa and Bill ! 🙂
@Bill: I wasn't aware of Joe Walker flying one of these, which one was his? Looking forward to your project.
Which kit do you plan to use ?
For my Italeri, the NASA logo decals were slightly too large as you probably saw (Wingroot). Might be better with Hasegawa or Tamiya. The Testors Metalizer / Sealer mix was a ready to use gift from Bernhard Schrock . It is a result if his personal research, maskable, durable, and cured within minutes - the perfect metal solution -
But unfortunately the ingredients are almost impossible to source in Europe......
I'm sure he might share his recipe with you...🙂

Joe Walker was flying supersonic chase plane F-104N, N813NA, in the collision with the XB-70 Valkyrie bomber, resulting in the loss of his life along with Major Carl Cross on 8 June 1966. I believe the markings were similar to those of 011, 012, 013, and 812 that are on the Rocketeer sheet. (There were only three NASA chase planes, 011, 012, and 013. At times they were marked 811, 812, and 813. Walker's was marked 813.) I'll have to cut and paste between the 013 and the 812 in order to get 813. Since the F-104N (N for NASA) is essentially an F-104G, I'll probably use the Italeri (ESCI) kit.

Your Starfighter turned out really great, even tho you had these issues with the decals.
I'm really surprised about the rocketeer decals - they actually looked pretty good and very professional and I expected them to be ok (I have never used them yet and I have several sheet in my stash...)
Well, I'll give it a try anyways and will be prepared 😉
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you Murad, Sören, Christian, Björn, Pierre-Christian and Benoit, I'very pleased that you like my 104 !
@Benoit: Hopefully it is only this particular sheet, that is of inferior quality and the others are better..🙂
@ Bill: Thanks for the info ! Was it the very same Joe Walker, who flew the X 1E " Little Joe " during the earlier years ?
2 August 2016, 14:49
Bill Gilman
@Hanno: Yes, this is the same Joe Walker. He flew a lot of the X planes including X-1, X-1A, X-1E, X-3, X-4, X-5, X-15, as well as the D-558. He set the record for altitude in the X-15 (108 km) and is considered the 7th US astronaut. He also did some of the early flight testing of what became the lunar lander. He flew the P-38 and F-5A in WWII. He and Scott Crossfield are probably my favourite US test pilots. When I was growing up in the 1950s, these guys were my heroes.
