If you need to use putty, I suggest trying out Vallejo putty, which isn't toxic the way way Tamiya putty is afaik. Make sure to best clean up excess putty, or use masking tape, to avoid putty going hard in places that would require more cleanup.
A sanding sponge can be cut with scissors into smaller bits, to get in between details.

Yes, it will need some filling and sanding to the joints. I usually use Humbrol filler thinned with liquid poly and applied between masking tape with a cocktail stick and sanded with sanding sponges. I will try the Vallejo putty next time I am shopping 😀
