Nice progress Lukasz 👍

Thanks, I enjoy such a quickbuild kit a lot, currently trying to make the canopy fit the fuselage 🙂

I know what you mean regarding the quick build. I did not know Zvezda made Yak 3. How is it (besides the crappy canopy fit 😄 )?

Following one more time, Łukasz. Looking well so far.

@Cuajete: good to see you again 🙂
@Alec: Surpisingly good fit I have to say, but the wing roots, tail wheel mount and canopy require more attention (and putty). I also decided to remove pins connecting tires and undercarriage covers, to mke them look less toyish.

Łukasz Gliński
I destroyed the canopy today 🙁 now I have to order a replacement...

Łukasz Gliński
The new canopy has arrived, has been cut in 3 parts (this is its design) and mounted, but I'm still struggling with the wing roots...
18 March 2018, 17:44
Alec K
I hate the wing root joints myself. There just is no good tool or sanding medium to get in there properly, especially in 1:72.

Sprayed the AMT-7 blue by Vallejo Model Air (first time ever) and it was awesome experience - quick dry, good flow, already mixed. I think I'm in love😉 Let's see if it doesn't peel off tomorrow😉

Michael Hickey
Nice job, if I may can I ask how you spray Vallejo's Model Air? I've tried spraying their Aluminium color with not a lot of success.

I uploaded my compressor setting on the last pic - approx. 1bar. My airbrush is H&S Ultra 0,2mm. I have around +18'C and 30% of humidity in my workshop and no ventilator for painitng installed yet - that's the whole story 🙂
The metalizers might behave different way though...
23 March 2018, 22:03
Michael Hickey
Cool thanks mate, I'll keep playing around with them.

Sprayed the green today and removed the masking - there are few scratches to correct, but it looks acceptable to me. However the Gunze H doesn't look as smooth as Vallejo even though I added the Levelling Thinner to it.
25 March 2018, 18:43
Adam Gudynowski
Maybe to high pressure?
26 March 2018, 05:57
Łukasz Gliński
Not sure - below 1 bar my airbrush starts to caugh, choke and spit 🙁
It's possible however, that I still don't thin the paint well enough (I'm still trying to find the perfect formula😉😢
26 March 2018, 07:03
Adam Gudynowski
Pressure about 1bar is OK. Try thinning it at least 1:2 ratio paint:thinner or more.
26 March 2018, 08:53
Alec K
I would also venture a guess that your paint is too thick. I often thin my paint 1:3 or more, but mainly look for a milk-like consistency of the paint in the cup (ie very thin).

Moreover, I think that for overall coat 0,2 mm airbrush tip is way too small: it forces the paint to dry too fast, hence the rough finish. For overall coats, "high volume of paint, low pressure of air" is the way to go. Paul Budzik does a great job explaining this in this video: paulbudzik.com/minia..spray-guns-pg-2.html. I use Eclipse HP-CS Dual Action Airbrush Gun with the optional 0,5mm nozzle, and I think I need a bigger nozzle still to achieve really good smooth coat. Hope this helps.

Łukasz Gliński
Thx for the link Alec, but it says 404 🙁. Currently I cannot afford second airbrush for overall coating, but it has a place in my future plans. 🙂
26 March 2018, 19:16
Martin Oostrom
The 0,2 is too small for overall coats, even in 1:72, no matter how thin your paint is (unless you're a hidden airbrush-master).
You could buy a 0,4 nozzle & needle for the ultra. plastmodel.pl/p/14/1..ty-ultra-grafo-.html
Cheaper than a new airbrush.
For Alec's link, just remove the . at the end 😉
26 March 2018, 20:48
Alec K
Martin is right - 0,4 will be better than what you are using. And sorry for the link issue (below should work)

Guys. All my models in 1:72-1:32 scale range where painted with 0.2 nozzle. It's possible and gives good results. Please verify yourself.

Spitfire Mk.Vb RFD | Project by karambolis8 (1:32)
Su-27 Kaliningrad | Project by karambolis8 (1:72)
Spitfire Mk.IXc UFQ | Project by karambolis8 (1:72)
F-16C block 50 Spangdahlem Red Flag 2015 | Project by karambolis8 (1:48)

I've used 0.4 only for varnishing, but before I bought 0.4 I have been doing it also with 0.2 and it was perfectly fine, just more time consuming.

The key is good paint, thinning and pressure, nozzle size is less important.
27 March 2018, 07:52
Soeren R.
I agree with Adam.
A 0,2mm needle is more than good enough for a overall coat - even in 48.
Ive painted my X-1 and Ki27 with a 0,2 needle and with MRP or/and Gunze colors.

The 0,4 needle is only used for Primer / Clear Coats.
27 March 2018, 07:58
Martin Oostrom
Yeah, but you two guys are paintmasters 👍
Us mere mortals need more practise (and/or a bigger nozzle)
27 March 2018, 08:10
Soeren R.
Haha thx Martin, but Im far far away from a "paintmaster" 🙂

Adam Gudynowski
Good joke 😄

Łukasz Gliński
I see I launched a storm in a teacup unwillingly😉
Btw. I sprayed the satin citadel varnish and it looks bit smoother 🙂
27 March 2018, 09:02
Alec K
My bad, I certainly did not mean to say that using a larger airbrush tip is the only way to achieve smooth coats, as Adam and Soren correctly pointed out, and Adams superb work clearly proves. I personally experienced better results once I followed Paul Budzik's advice. No preaching was intended... 🙂
27 March 2018, 12:53
David Andrs
In my experience smooth coats are achieved by properly thinned paint. A good start is about 1:2 (paint : thinner) as Adam said. Yes, it will require more layers to spray, but the result will be much much better. Also, keep in mind that not all paints can be thinned down as much as other. One example would be Mission Model Paints. Just my $0.02.
27 March 2018, 13:55
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks for your input Dave 👍 I'll play around with more thinning in fothcoming projects

Another lesson and a hint for other people trying to build this snap-tite-quick-build fit: never trust the designers (like I did) and thin the exhaust before painting anything...
31 March 2018, 09:21
Łukasz Gliński
What would you say for a yellow propeller spinner? The camo is speculative anyway...
7 April 2018, 17:09
Martin Oostrom
Nah, that would make it too German. Something red and white?
7 April 2018, 18:36
Łukasz Gliński
😄 Didn't take ze German connection into account - after the WWII the green/blue combat planes in Poland often had single-coloured spinners (yellow, blue, red, white etc.)

I say: go for it😉 👍 👍 👍

@Martin: that's not a surprise at all 😛
@Alec: thx, already started spraying yellow 🙂

Spinner is yellow, received also the new brass cannon barrel. Fit of the spinner base is disappointing, I did my best to hide it, but I'm fed up and hereby proclaim it good enough. Added the wheels, their covers and a scratch brake hose (black wire). Unmasked the canopy - has to open it to clean some stuff from the inside. It's drying now, will correct and wash it next (to hide the masking edges).

Thanks, I have to correct the de-masking damage and started to wonder whether all Yak-3s had the aerial...

Łukasz Gliński
Finished! Macro is merciless, in those pics the tranaprencies look bit dissapointing, without macro I couldn't see that 🙂 In the last moment I found some green blotches on the right wing undersides (didn't wash my hands properly😉😢, so I had to correct it (pics are taken afterwards).
Next: Vampire 🙂

Vampire is going to get some orange, while X-1 is waiting in the queue (this one is planned to get the right colouring overall😉😢
