Thank you all. The mud is real (sifted mineral soil mixed with white glue and "painted" on by brush). It's kind of fun to play with...

Yes, the white glue gives it a "wet" look after it dries. After the white glue dries, I blend it into the model with paint using a "dust" color via airbrush. Sifting the dry soil to a fine dust is really important to get "scale" dirts particles. I dry the soil in the oven on a cookie sheet, and then sift. My wonderful wife puts up with dirt in the oven, but I bought my own flour sifter to maintain domestic tranquility...
