Hoping to see this one finished. I like boats myself. I used to draw sideview drawing of ships as a kid. I was terrible at drawing cars. I can drive a car, truck and a bus, but a car I have never been good at drawing. 😄

Welcome Gentlemen 🙂 I also started from drawing profiles in the elementary school 🙂 and decided to start building ship kits finally. I also bought a new colour for the deck today, as the dark tan seems too pale for me.

Filling, sanding and tweaking the superstructure, but it's still bit far from a good fit to the deck.

Can you explain how you did the white band on the hull, what is that tape you are using, I am assuming you painted white first then used that strange white tape and then painted black?

@Richmond - the procedure was exactly as you described it. The strange tape is:
Masking Tape for Curves 2mm (Tamiya 87177, No)

Thank you and by coincidence I currently have some on order from Hobbylink. I have already painted black, and was struggling how to do the white especially given the thickness shown on the instructions, I will go away and follow your lead. Nice work with the modifications by the way. Probably above my pay grade but may give the handrail a try.

Thanks, this is just a bit of washing experiments. I still struggle to get the superstructure-deck joint looking reasonable.
And just remember: this tape is quite strong, so you'd better get some good paint first - enamel or lacquer, as I don't think acrylic stuff will resist it.

Did some research and the kit requires a lot of corrections to look like Ross Jackal. As it's my first ship for many years, I think I'll build it mainly OOB. If you're interested I uploaded my research results in a new album.

Welcome and thanks for your interest, I still can't decide whether I should build it as it is or try to make it more similar to Ross Jackal. 🙂

Change of the plan 🙂 I learned lately, that the original kit has been based or Ross Kandahar. But instead of having 4 trawler gallows, the spures contain only two. Which makes it perfect base for Kandahar's sister - Ross Khartoum. I have to order white letter though 🙂

Anyway, thanks for the link, appreciate that 🙂

Small update: I started scratchbuilding the railings - the rear one is done. And in the meantime I keep on adding other bits and pieces (searchlight, winch etc.)

Welcome. Well, at first it was to be OOB fun build, but then I found the kit to be way different than original. Hence now I'm trying to find a balance between OOB and building everything from scratch😉

Have to agree I recently built this kit and the design was awful and the whole experience was not enjoyable. I then decided I would never buy another Revell rebox and then I went and purchased the little tug!!!!!

Just found out today I made a mistake while ordering the decals - I ordered "Ross Khartoum" and "GY.506", which was the number carried by Ross Kormorant. 🙁

I believe styrene would be easier to bend, if you heat it a little, but I personally never got around to try that out myself. An other option for using styrene rod, is using metal wiring from a electrical power cable, which can be rolled more or less straight on the table.
What I have noticed about styrene rod, is that, if you do make a casual bend as is, once you add liquid glue to such a bent piece, you risk having the plastic snap once the glue bites into the styrene, admittedly for extremely tight turns.
This all looks like such fun I am tempted to get this kit myself. :|

Thx for feedback. Currently looking for some elastic thread (that wouldn't break the masts) to start rigging.
I can recommend the kit, but only if you're ready for some scratchbuilding 🙂
I may try another one of them, but in the shorter version - I learned lately the Ross "cat" trawlers have been lengthened at some point of their career and Revell kit features the later extended variant.

I have some rigging thread, never been used. I think one is supposed to bring a somewhat hot element near the thread, and then the thread will tighten up, I think that is how the rigging threads I have, is supposed to work. Maybe someone else can chime in on the choice of rigging thread, not something I started using myself.

The new threads (like Uschi or MiG (Uschi's rebox actually) are elastic enough to have them straight all the time. I have an older non-elastic thread on some of my kits (e.g. Corsair or Anson) and I used to warm it, but it tends to get limp over time 🙁

Hi mates! Any recommendations for the ensign? I was thinking of either using decals with alu-foil or thin plastic sheet bent to some flaggy shape, but perhaps you have some other ideas?

Hi, have painted tin foil white and then added a flag decal for my Le Suroit and Calypso models. Its a bit fiddly but looks OK. The only thing is the cut edges show the foil as I add the decal and then cut out the foil.

Thx Tim for your reply. I decided to go for the thin plastic sheet. Formed it today, plan to paint it red and then add only the Union Jack part of the decal (based on your experience).

Pat & Mat look good in this scale 👍 What do you use for rigging? Recently I've bought mig rigging 0.2 and I'm very satisfied.

Thanks Adam & Jv
I tried the MiG stuff in all 3 sizes, the main problem being untying it from the that piece of cardboard they're strung onto.
Then I switched to AK thingy, being much easier to handle (see the new pic and project inventory).
PS. Still having some of the MiG boxes I can give you next time we meet, I'm sick of them tbh. 😉

Welcome mate, that damn rigging takes me a lot of time (and frustration), so it's definitely not the end yet.
Thanks to Frank Spahr's build documentation I was able to plan the location of rigging, so I keep dragging on 😉
In the meantime I managed to break off the rudder (again), ensign and rear mast (again) 🙁

Thank you everyone, your support was crucial to reach the end of this epic cruise 🙂
It's been long 3,5 yrs, whilst the world was able to turn upside down.
It reminds me I launched it in a completely different reality, like on another planet.
In search of a display case currently.
