Thanks James 🙂.
For the paint, I am using a red-oxide enamel primer (I wouldn't prime at all, but the Model Master Acrylics I use come off very easily when I mask the waterline later). Then I use a rust colored acrylic over the primer. Next, I wet it all down with tap water and shake on a ton of table salt. There's a picture on my album of a LA Class sub (USS Boise SSN 764 | Album by Gbmodeler (1:350) ). When that drys, I overcoat with a reddish-orange acrylic I mix-up myself. It almost looks like Ferrari red. I only allow that coat to dry about 30 minutes before I wash off the salt off with warm tap water, scrubbing a little with a paint brush. The combination of the salt, paint and tap water give a mottled effect that I really like. I sometimes use a gray filter coat. The final dullcoat makes the whole model a little paler too. Hope that helps!
