Like most tank models, this one starts with the wheels and suspension. But it's all very tiny. Hope I don't go blind!

Thats a real "I need it" project! Respect George!
I like you guys making these tiny tiny parts look like the real thing. Fantastic!
I'm tuned in!

Looking at reference pictures of museum tanks on the internet, this kit has all the little parts and pieces of the real machine (which is really cool), but some parts are a little "heavy" or poor in detail. Also, the instructions are not always clear to me. I don't think I could build this model correctly, without reference photos. I'm not complaining, just informing in case others are interested. I like this kind of build and, so far, am having a blast building it!

Looks Great George. So your not going to chuck everything and get the Meng kit instead? It looks like you've made a lot of improvements. I'm guessing those are the RPM individual tracks. They're a big improvement from the vinyl kit tracks. I'd like to hear about how the rivets go and what you're using. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Thanks Mates! Applied a pin wash around the rivets and in the panel lines ( which basically covered the whole tank) for the first weathering steps. The tracks are on and the stowage details painted. It's still shiny from the gloss coat.

Brian, the kit supplies rivets (for the turret, which comes rivet-less) in the form of little "bumps" on the sprue. You shave these off and apply individually. There's not enough to do the turret and replace the ones I sanded off, so I supplemented with Grandt Line rivets (model railroad product).

Cool build 👍

awsome... what have you used for masking, or is it brush painted?
 6 January 2014, 16:48
George Bacon
Brush painted. I think I have abandoned masking forever, unless I want a straight edge.

Superb George! I was hoping you had a secret for replacing rivets. I heard someone talk about using little particles from a spent Brita water filter but I haven't tried it. Does this make you officially a "rivet counter"?

The finished model looks excellent! Great weathering. I guess there's still hope for the old RPM kit after all. I'll have to get the complete story of all the things you replaced. (Tell me you didn't use the plastic chain links.) Will you be bringing it to the next meeting? Congratulations on another fine build!

Thanks Brian. I didn't count the rivets, but I know there were too many! 🙂 The chain is metal (from a craft store). I won't be at the January meeting, 🙁 but look forward to February!

Hi George. I'm a fairly new member and wanted to say that the FT 17 finished model looks great. Great for brush painting and weathering adds to the realism. I like the early days of armour. Canada had purchased over 200 of the American built M1917 at the beginning of WWII and used them in training.

Brilliant!
I really like the camo pattern and your weathering work.
Last summer I visited the Pennsylvania Military Museum. There, they have an original vehicle of the US-version.
A precious little thing and beside the camo pattern not to tell apart from your model...

Thank everybody! The FT-17 is a facinating subject, and they say it set the standard we still use today - turret, tracks, and mud! 🙂
