The visibility into the cockpit will be far better than I expected. The Pilot -seat combination in the kit is very little more than a lump of plastic, so I
tried to scratch something just to prevent the cockpit from being entirely empty.......

Sribing completed. The clear parts turned out to be unusably thick and too small. When I spoke to Bernhard about it, he suggested to replace them with very thin transparent foil, to glue them into place with CA and sand it flush. Turned out to be the perfect solution. Windows are completely flush with the fuselage now.
Many thanks to Bernhard Schrock !

Hanno can you please explain to me the process of the clear parts and the "clear foil" used and what did you do when you mentioned that you sanded it flush? I understand the term but how did you go about it without affecting the clear parts?

Thank you Ulf !
@Ben : I cut two well oversized Parts out of 0.13 mm clear styrene, and glued them into position with Tamiya CA. After processeing, I sealed the seams with more Ca and sanded just the seams very very carefully, not to harm the see through areas. At first with a coarse sanding stick, then with 1000 grid Tamiya sanding sponge. Took me about 1,5 hours.
Next thing is to cut masks to protect the clear during the following steps. I hope to be able to close the fuselage today, after putting in the cockpit parts.....

Dedication Hanno, thanks for the info. It's a lovely plane and one that I've wanted to do but unsure of which kit.

Any time Ben. No shake and bake one available of this bird, I'm afraid. I came across this one by chance, otherwise I would have gone for the Planet kit I guess, but that one is rather expensive. There is another one from Mach 2, but everyone said it's crap. 🙂

I've got the MAch 2 and is really like a hard vacuform , may be worst ... Revell kit is not so bad .... I built it long time ago
[img1]
You've also got the 1/144 Dragon double kit which is shake and bake kit ....

Beautiful build Julian ! 🙂 The Revell Kit really isn't bad fitwise, but the raised panels need some attention, the Windows as well, as mentioned. Wasn't aware of the Dragon one, but it´s not my scale anyhow.

Thanks hanno .... As for the the windows I did otherwise....
I glued the kit clear parts and applied with several coats of Micro Kristal Klear until all was flush with the fuselage. After that a clear gloss top coat sealed it all. Not a perfect solution, but acceptable ....

Some small progress : Scratchbuilt Cockpit parts attached to fuselage, masked the "windows". Ready to close the fuselage now.

X-3 completed. This was no easy one, a lot of filling and sanding had to be done. Scribed some of the more important panel lines.
Decals were useless, as they were made in 1982, and everything White had turned yellowish. So insignias came from the spare box, and the logos were homemade.
Did a bit of scratchbuilt deatailing to the gearstruts and the inner side of the wheel well doors.
The highly polished looking Metal surfaces of the wings were done by using Uschi's
Chrome powder over Alclad Black gloss base.

I love these experimental jets - very well done Hanno!
Seems the X-3 has similar wings as the F-104?

Thank you Christian ! You're right, apparently the F 104 was the main benefactor of the experience and data gained by the X 3 project. Their wings look very much alike !

Actually the X 3 never gained its full potential, as the designated Westinghouse J 46 engine never materialized, but the F 104 turned out to be the real hot rod 😎.
