In general, what is the minimum number of items required to make it suitable to create a new Topic? (Assuming an adequate, more general Topic already exists.)

For cars/planes/ships it should be the family of the object. Thus in theory 1 kit in the topic can be fine.

We should also not create "bundled/generic" topics if not needed.

Not "Deutz tractors" (too broad) but the actual family/series should be the topic. If there is only 1 object it is still OK for the topic to be there

Not "Star Wars" for every thing linked to "Star wars", but the actual "type" of object

For accessories/non typed objects like buildings/trees/bridges/telepone poles/.... we can keep them in the same "generic topic"

If it warrants splitting/merging = debatable 🙂

(We once had a single topic for everything which was a building. Watertowers/houses/factories)... as more data comes in = we split/merge/....

eg. This topic is too broad and should be split (if possible) into the individual families of vehicles they produced. Not easy when the product title does not provide that info. (and these catch all topics are created = ok, but ideally are cleaned up)

RWM Brand: Lionel Trains US
has almost exclusively completed models in their range, but a large portion of the items in Railwaymates are listed as kits. Making a bulk change of all Full Kits to Completed Models will certainly improve the correctness in a major way.
I don't know what you prefer to class railway tracks as, though.

Man, trying to straighten up the railway models is a real uphill struggle. I guess a lot have been added by data files from other data bases and therefore have poor data field fits. I note that some 26 % lack Topics ...
I'm also consistently the only one shown as being online, so it seems other contributors are thin on the ground.

I suggest a general "Britification" in the overall terminology in railwaymates, seeing as it is a European site originally. Specifically, all Topics that have "railroad" in their primary name should have this changed to "railway", for consistency. "Railroad" could still be used in the synonym names.
An exception might be made for any Topics specifically intended for American subjects, but I understand you are rather moving away from that.

The Topic "Railway"

is currently under Trains » Freight wagons but is used as a catch-all for railway stuff. Such a topic is needed but should not be under "Freight Wagons", especially since one can't see the category when selecting the Topic. It would be better if it came directly under Trains.

Well, some sort of catch-all is needed for all the bits and bobs connected to railways: I think that is unavoidable. But it needs periodic cleaning up, I guess. I just went through the Railway topic and reassigned about half the items. Many of the remaining ones should be moved as well but it is not always easy to figure out where they should go.

If certain string patterns are present in a title of a product I can bulk assign the matching products.

Still semi manual but it goes faster than 100% manual. Especially for lesser known/popular topics.

It was more a message to let you know that:
- behind the scenes stuff happens as well
- that if you do see a strange thing = it is me 😉
- that I appreciate it the work you do, and I wanted to boost the progress we make

A great many Vollmer brand items (989, to be exact) are currently shown as "Completed models", despite Vollmer having very few such items in their catalogue. Presumably this is due to some past bulk upload.
If you are able to make bulk changes, you could change any Vollmer brand item that has a 5-digit item number starting 42***, 43***, 44***, 45***, 47*** or 49*** and currently with Product type "Completed models" and change these to "Full kit".
Those with numbers 46*** and 48*** and shown as "Completed models" can be changed to "Materials".
A very small number of items will be incorrectly classed this way but they are already incorrect, anyway.

I suggest that there should be a separate topic for the overhead power supply lines for railways. It seems to have many different names: Overhead Lines, Overhead Contact Wires, Catenary, etc.

A great many Vollmer brand items are currently listed under both railwaymates and diecastmates. To my knowledge, they have made no diecasts, and it should be safe enough to remove all items from diecastmates.
