I have this kit and some other Tamiya kits from the same time, and they all seem as if some sort of rc kit was meant to be added. anyone know the deal?

Many old Tamiya kits were originally made as RC kits. This can be seen in the "product timeline" for this kit also. You can still get some newer RC releases today, if you look around.
